Lotovention

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

If you are reading this article, you have probably purchased lottery tickets at some point in your life. Most of those lotto tickets were losers  Lotteries are designed to be that way  To have more losers than winners. But perhaps those losing tickets might be worth money in the future. Perhaps you should not throw them away. Why? Because there is a thriving lottery ticket collectors community which is growing every year. It’s called the Lotovention. They meet every year to trade lotto tickets. And, is this community grows, people might start to pay money for rare or antique lottery tickets especially instant scratch tickets.

Just consider some lessons from your childhood. You might have been a collector of, say, hockey cards or comic books. Perhaps you even had a rookie Bobby Orr card or the first-ever issue of the X-Men comic book. Either of those wood be worth big money today. If you only knew that back then. But you were a kid and you did not care.

The same hockey card or comic book lessons could also be applied to lottery tickets. Perhaps if you had, say, an unscratched New York Lottery instant scratch ticket from 1980, someone would be willing to pay a lot of money to buy it from you. If you couldn’t find a buyer at Lotovention, perhaps you could auction it off on eBay. The lottery ticket collectors convention goes to show that there is a market for such a thing.Of course, there is no way to go back in time to get lottery ticket relics, but perhaps you could start stashing away some of them now to put them up for sale in a few decades.

Combat Sports

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

This is just one style of Combat Sports. People commonly use the acronym HTH or H2H to describe this. This is basically one on one fighting without the use of a weapon and generally refers to the military. Hand to Hand Combat is often taught at Boot Camp, and more advanced HTH is taught by either High Ranking Martial Arts Instructors, usually Black Belts with several stripes  to Special Forces and Special Operations Units within all branches of the Armed Forces.

There are 3 types of physical contact that typically occur in Close Combat Sports. This is an attack on another person using either a weapon or a specific body part. I’m referring to body parts such as the fists, elbows, knees, head like in a head butt, legs and feet. There are many ways to strike an opponent with either your body or any specific weapon. Fencing is an example of using a weapon for striking. These are specific maneuvers used to gain a physical advantage over your opponent. Jiu Jitsu and wrestling are two examples of self defense disciplines that employ grappling.

This definition is pretty straight forward. These are specific tools used to cause injury to opponents. For thousands of years, people have been actively taking part in some form of Combat Contact Sports. The Ancient Olympic Games began as early as 776 BC. They were known to have participants of full contact sports. The Gladiators of Rome were often involved in duels and would fight each other to the death. Mixed Martial Arts arrived on the scene relatively recently around 1993, and is known to include a wide variety of Combat Disciplines amalgamated into one form of it is  very own Martial Art. It is  popularity has exploded recently with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

The Game Of Soccer

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

The status of soccer, also called football or association football, in the US is spreading quickly. Local leagues are emerging all over the country and the national team is going from strength to strength on the international stage.

While soccer hasn’t reached the widespread popularity of American football or baseball, it is growing all the time. Its simplicity is a huge attraction. In fact, all you really need to get a game of soccer together is a soccer ball.

Though soccer is almost a religion in many parts of the world, it is only now, with the arrival of international names like David Beckham on the domestic scene, that it is starting to gain momentum in the US.

As mentioned, soccer is quite a simple game. All you need is a few players, 2 goals and a soccer ball. Players, with the exception of the keeper, can not touch the ball with their hands and the team that scores the most goals wins.

Although the soccer ball is the only really vital item – goals can be made from just about anything – there is a huge range of soccer equipment available to buy and the sport has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. Here is a short summary of the main soccer equipment on the market:

Soccer balls – Footballs can differ a bit in size but generally have the same components. The exterior of the ball used to be made from leather but is now most often made from polyurethane or PVC. Footballs are normally stitched together from a number of pieces and are long-lasting and resistant to water. The next layer is a lining which guards the inflatable bladder, which can be filled with air by a pump.

Soccer shoes – While basic sneakers can suffice for a casual game of football, the more serious soccer player will require quality soccer shoes. These are lightweight, slim shoes, often with a surface that grips to aid control and spin. They can be made from leather or synthetic, though leather is the common choice for comfort. The underside of the football shoe will have studs of some kind, depending on the surface on which they will be used.

Shin guards – Most regular football players use these. The shins are the area of the body most exposed when playing soccer so these light plastic protectors can save on a lot of cuts and bruises, or worse.

Soccer clothes – The three essential items of soccer clothes are jerseys, shorts and socks. Jerseys and shorts are normally made from lightweight polyester to help avoid overheating. Socks normally come up to the knee to help keep shin guards in place.

Goalkeeper gear – This differs slightly from normal soccer gear. Goalkeepers need special gloves that help them catch the soccer ball and they usually wear full-length trousers and jerseys with padded elbows to protect them when diving.
